Alexis Richardson co-founded a company in 2014 called Weaveworks, which created an open source GitOps project called Flux CD. In February, the company ceased operations, despite having gained new customers in 2023. Among the events that precipitated the closure of the business were acquisition talks with a larger company that fell through "at the 11th hour," according to a post by Richardson on LinkedIn. Weaveworks is one example of a company associated with a flourishing open source project – Flux CD continues under the CNCF – that ultimately couldn't make the business side work. Richardson gives his take on what happened with the company and how the CNCF could help businesses like it in the future, as well as what he's got planned next.

Buongiorno dai cryptolovers! In realtà non volevo dedicare tanto spazio alle news dal web3 ma i commenti sotto lo scorso episodio mi hanno triggerato e quindi le prime due news sono tutte dedicate alla meraviglia delle criptovalute.

Poi però c'è spazio anche per Windows e Linux, anzi Linux su Windows e Windows su Linux, e infine per il triste saluto ai pionieri di GitOps di Weaveworks.

It has influenced #kubernetes, #cloudnative, #GitOps to a large extent, creators of Cortex (TSDB) and #Flux (CD) projects, among others.

I've just learned about #Weaveworks shutting down. They've done a lot of very interesting work in the #kubernetes space over the years and I'm sad to see them go.

I'm a big #FluxCD fan, to the point where my team is in the process of moving our entire business over to it.

I'm glad to see @stefanprodan at a new company and continuing to work on Flux. 😄

Although WeaveWorks didn't do the DevOps community any favors with "GitOps", it's a shame that they have to close up. They built great tools and I hope Flux survives under the CNCF umbrella.
