Especially if that person is a sadistic malignant narcissist with an unquenchable thirst for power and revenge, and the ability to con the rubes. Throw in advancing dementia and institutional cowardice, and such a person could not just change the world but destroy it.

My guess is that elements of the US establishment are gunning for war with Iran. They are the rump of the Donald Rumsfeld-Dick Cheney neo cons. The lesson that they took from Iraq was that they didn't go far enough. Their interests align with Netanyahu and friends' maniacal fantasies of complete control from the (Euphrates) river to the sea. I suspect that they are also giving cover to Netanyahu and co's escalation.
More worrying still both Biden and Harris are pretty solidly neo con, hence the Cheney endorsement, so are unlikely to rein in this faction the way Trump did with Bolton.
