@ThunderHoneySnow Thank you for articulating this so much better than I have been able to. I have been struggling with e.g. the loss of community at my dojo.
The stated aim of aikido is "to subdue aggression without injury", with a side order of "injring your partner is injuring yourself".
That notional concern for the well-being of others became purely theoretical when masks became optional at the school.
To put it bluntly, the last time I went to a practice (2022) my mask was not treated with the respect and care that PPE demands, by an instructor who claimed the pandemic was over.
The years I spent practicing, believing I was among like-minded idealists, corrupted. The most effective tool I had for dealing with PTSD, lost. The sense of safety and autonomy develped on the mats, crushed.
And that loss is *further* from me than similar among friends and family.
I hope you and your friend find a path through. And, if you do, that you will share how. We all need wins, and that would be a powerful one.
