University of Notre Dame researchers tested 22 watchbands sold at various price points by a variety of manufacturers. The levels of this toxic compound varied with some bands containing up to 16,662 nanograms per gram (ng/g) of PFHxA. As these bands are often worn 16 hours a day or more, this toxin has ample opportunities for absorption through the skin. When in the market for a watchband, check the material used in its fabrication. The safest is a metal such as aluminum or titanium or a woven synthetic material such as nylon or polyester. I’ve been using the knockoff Apple Watch band for about three weeks now, and it’s holding up really well. The shine on the farther back band segment is from the closer band rubbing on it. The “shiny” part is covered when I’m wearing my watch. The band segment that’s fully exposed still looks great.
