Me and my BF just finished Watamote. When watching we watched an official subtitle for the first 8 episodes and a fan sub for the last few. I always hear things about how official translators commit "cultural genocide" and censor the more socially unacceptable aspects of Japanese media. But fan subers will just add offensive bullshit for the sake of it. In the outro To make refers to herself using "アホだ". That term is really broad but generally is used to call yourself stupid. In the official sub it's translated as "I'm an idiot" which is fine. The fan sub translated it as "I'm retarded". I really struggle to find any resource that considers retard to me the most appropriate translation when compared to other existing terms in Japanese. Next time you see someone do some big thing about western censorship, remember these people will just throw edge in for the sake of it.
