Yesterday's #wassailing.
Led by the #Eynsham #Morris, villagers processed through the orchard banging pots and pans to scare evil spirits, and singing to wake the apple trees and encourage them to produce a good harvest.

Spicy cider was readily available to everyone present, warmed on a roaring fire. And toast was hung in the trees - a gift for the good spirits. The birds will be pleased. πŸ˜€

Long may this ancient #folktradition continue!

I know there are many traditions associated with Wassailing. Here it has been our custom to Wassail our small orchard on 12th Night. We do this by giving each tree a bit of toasted bread that has been dipped in apple cider. Thereby "toasting" each tree. We then do a chorus of "Here we Come a-Wassailing" and recite some poetry. It is our way to give thanks for all the wonderful apples these trees provide us!

Here we come a wassailing
Among the leaves so green,
Here we come a wandering
So fair to be seen. β€œHealth to thee, good apple-tree,Well to bear, pocket-fulls, hat-fulls,
Peck-fulls, bushel-bag-fulls.”
β€œHere’s to thee, old apple-tree,
Whence thou may’st bud, and whence thou may’st blow,
And whence thou may’st bear apples enow
Hats full! caps full!
Bushel-bushel-sacks full,
And my pockets full, too, huzza!”

In the most famous Welsh Christmas wassailing, a troupe carries a horse skull on a pole (the "Mari Lwyd") to a home and sings a song requesting admittance. Once brought inside, the Mari Lwyd runs around neighing and snapping its jaws, causing havoc and scaring children.

Tech weary Brits revive apple tree 'wassailing' tradition

"Wassail!" yelled the crowd. "Cider for everyone!" In an orchard by a Welsh castle, hundreds of people gathered to wish good health to the apple trees in a centuries-old tradition enjoying a revival.

FRANCE 24

Off to do some #Wassailing today. I'm not dancing at this one, but will be singing (dancing at another #Wassail on the 18th though!)

Here's my post about last year's event, which I just attended as a spectator (except for the very important job of holding some apples), so it's fun to actually be taking part this year:

Not quite as sunny today, but very glad that it's dry, for now!
