"It leaves almost no chance of survival."

#Ukraine's ambassador in London, former general, Valery #Zaluzny, said to Ukrainian soldiers training in the UK:

“Remember that war becomes more cruel every day.

“It leaves almost no chance of survival. But war will be afraid of those that are ready to join it.”

Countless #BlackAmericans had openly opposed the #VietnamWar. As early as 1965, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee produced a statement that unequivocally lambasted the war, and said that no Black American should “fight in Vietnam for the white man's freedom, until all the Negro people are free in Mississippi."

Still, thanks to the draft's implicit #RacialBias , Black Americans disproportionately served in Vietnam. This is largely because then-college students — the majority of whom were white men — could defer enlistment. As such, the burden of enlistment fell more on non-college educated men, particularly non college-educated #BlackMen. As a result, by 1967, 64 percent of all eligible Black American males had been drafted. Only 31 percent of eligible white men had.

Please dont, for whoever they are or may be, I BEG you dont put them through the 🥩⚙️ 'meat grinder' that we 👀 saw. If you are a civilian - aka someone who has never served in any capacity of the military...

Consider this article knowledge - before you "regurgitate" the common: thank you for your service.

Consider not saying anything - OR - literally ask what the person did in the service - and be prepared for a short OR long version... and do not look at your watch. Allow that person to share OR not. Do not dig.

If you are not prepared for the ugly - then do not ask.

@PhoenixSerenity huh, i never knew that. not surprising really

@PhoenixSerenity if you go even further back, African American servicemen in WWII, deployed to the UK, were treated better than they ever were at home.

British refused to segregate pubs, etc, and the white American service people were incensed by this. Many a fight broke out over this

@sortius @PhoenixSerenity
Stuff like that is also part of how World War II policies in the military led to the Civil Rights movements of the 1950s and 60s: people saw glimpses of a world outside of segregation, and realized their power to stand up to it.
@Raccoon @sortius 100%. I've always been convinced that the reason US government has repeatedly slashed public school education funding is because they fear a highly educated population who would not support their political actions that harm society at large.

@PhoenixSerenity

I think that's probably a no-brainer. The relentless anti-education rhetoric I've seen from the US over the years is quite clearly intended to cultivate a support group of uneducated ya-hoos who believe whatever thay are told.

@Raccoon @sortius

@bytebro @PhoenixSerenity @Raccoon not educating your populace has a lot of effects, but most notably, it ensures grinding poverty; a necessity of unfettered capitalism.

It then becomes a feedback loop of lower education, less desire for education, less capabilities to get ahead, rinse, repeat

@sortius @bytebro @Raccoon It is 100% intentional. Easier to control an undereducated population.
@PhoenixSerenity @bytebro @Raccoon drives me nuts, because I watched my dad kill himself bringing vocational education to places like Waziristan, Laos hill tribes, and the Mongolian steppe, but I see countries like the US (and, Australia, don't get me wrong), cut back education and/or make it prohibitively expensive
@PhoenixSerenity @bytebro @Raccoon I do find it funny, we started on BIPOC resistance, and ended at education. Says it all, really? 😆

@PhoenixSerenity
This is something that impresses me greatly about #MuhammadAli, that he was drafted, and, even though he could have used his celebrity status to stay safe, he used it to become a major face in the opposition of the #Vietnam war. The world got to see hearings with old white men calling a successful young black man "boy" repeatedly, chastising him as some sort of criminal for this simple act of not wanting to kill people for a country that didn't respect his rights.

It also affects the #transgender movement to this day that, despite him repeatedly asserting that his name was now Muhammad Ali, they kept referring to him by his #DeadName. Backlash to this set the tone for later rights of other people to go by different names.

@Raccoon This is one of my fave historical photos of him. Marching with Black Panthers, protesting the war on Vietnam.
I'll always have deep respect for him for his strong humanitarian, anti-war & anti-oppression stances & activism.

@PhoenixSerenity
Looking at photos of this stuff reminds me of the photo of #BernieSanders being arrested in 1963 for protesting school segregation in Chicago.
