1870s-type waist overalls.
The stitching on the front pockets is not only decorative, it also serves the practical purpose of keeping the pocket lining in place for reinforcement.

1870s-type waist overalls. While I'm working on the front pockets, here's a view of the completed back panel. #selfmadejeans #waistoveralls #eurekajeans #forover30years #justahobby #notforsale
Attaching the fly buttons on a pair of 1870s-type waist overalls using real deadstock iron buttons from the 1870s!! While the buttons themselves are 150 years old, the studs are exact reproductions that I had made based on a handful of deadstock studs that came with the buttons. These buttons are attached by riveting them onto the fabric with a hollow brass stud, which is crushed and flattened to secure it to the button. It is the oldest type of riveted metal button, which was introduced as an improvement on sew-on buttons. I'll post more details on these buttons in a later post. Some details on a pair of waist overalls set around 1905, just after the introduction of overlocking but before chainstitch machines were used, so the back and yoke seams were flat-felled.
The denim is a lightweight 2x1, perfect for summer.

Two pairs of 1938 "Blue Buckles" waist overalls I made a couple of years ago.
Besides the vintage blue buckles, the distinguishing feature is the "X" bartacks on the inner corners of the back pockets to prevent scratching the furniture. The outer corners are riveted for added strength.

Some details on a pair of waist overalls I made in 1998, a quarter century ago!
The buckle is self-made, as I hadn't found any real vintage or replica buckles yet.
They've needed some repairs, but I still wear them every now and then.

Some details of a pair of mid-1910s waist overalls that I made last year.
This pair is set shortly after the introduction of chainstitch machines and the addition of belt loops, which are still made of a lighter weight denim.
The left-hand twill denim used for this pair is some of my favorite!

1879 Jones patent brown duck waist overalls.
Done! These were not easy, but a lot of fun to make. Haven't decided yet whether to wash and wear these or keep them as a kind of self-made deadstock.
Anyway, time now to focus on another exciting project ...
