If you guessed digital, you got that part right.

Casio VZ1 from the 1980s. IPD synthesis with ring modulation and 8 modules (or “operators” in yamaha dx speak). Taking phase distortion engine way beyond the casio CZ line (or yamaha dx for that matter).

I further used the TEAC reel to reel to change speed and alter the sound. External fx were lexicon vortex and reverb.

At the beginning of the year, i discovered that Bob Grey at Greytsounds was still selling floppy disk sets of patches for the synths that had a drive (#Yamaha #DX7IIFD, #sy77 #roland #D20 ,#ensoniq #vfx SD, #Korg 01/Wfd, DSS-1). So i first got the SY77 set. Then the D20 set. I saw he also had sysex for the #d50 got that too. And now 2 floppies, 3 banks for the VFX-SD. I’m just missing the #Casio #vz1 sysex bank and i’ll have covered all my 80s synths for which he has a set.

Jezz has two hands, but I count at least 5, maybe six Roland Jupiter-8... plus a Roland SH-101 and a Roland TR-808. Playing with Black Sabbath and Robert Plant Band had some definite financial advantage, no matter.

He said in an interview he used 4 jupiter-8 live for layers. Maybe the same sound detuned, maybe different sounds, it doesn't say. My Roland D50 and Casio VZ-1 both can layer 4 sounds, so no need to bring 4 to a gig.
