Every year, on the third Thursday of May, thousands of people in Ukraine and across the world wear the vyshyvanka, the traditional Ukrainian embroidered shirt.

It is not just a folkloric garment. It is a symbol of memory, identity and historical continuity. Each region, each colour and each ornament tells a story: love and protection, land and remembrance, sky and spirituality.

Born in 2006 from a student initiative at the University of Chernivtsi, World Vyshyvanka Day has grown into a global celebration of Ukrainian culture. Since 2014, it has also become a powerful sign of unity and cultural resistance.

Today, wearing a vyshyvanka means keeping the past alive, bringing identity into everyday life, and standing with a people defending not only its independence, but also its soul.

For Vyshyvanka Day, decided to post my old photo in a Kyiv Vyshyvanka. Since then, my sister stole it. But hey, this photo is now immortal.

Vyshyvanka (Embroidery) Day is about more than traditional clothing.

It is about identity, belonging and the stories we carry with us.

Each embroidery pattern has its own meaning, often symbolising protection, family, strength, love or connection to a particular region of Ukraine.

This year, we marked the day together with our neighbours in the photo, sharing a moment of Ukrainian culture, warmth and unity.

We defend what is ours not just in words, but on the battlefield – every day, without ceasing. So that we may remain true to ourselves. The vyshyvanka is our talisman and our armour.
