It’s that time of year again! Google is kicking off its annual conference on May 19, 2026, live from Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, CA and you can watch it all unfold live here with us.

As usual, there will be a consumer keynote with new software updates and new features for Google’s ecosystem in the morning, and a developer-centric keynote followed by that. I/O is a developer event with hands-on learning, technical talks, and Googlers on-hand to share their insights, but Google also uses this event to outline new developments in things like Android and existing operating systems and platforms, at times unveils the latest technology hardware too. With The Android Show now out of the way, like last year, focus of this year would be AI and Gemini as well.

Telus Uses AI to Alter Call-Agent Accents
According to reporting by iPhone in Canada and The Globe and Mail, **Telus** is using AI through its **Telus Digital** unit to modify call-centre agents' accents in real time. iPhone in Canada reports the speech-to-speech tool is built by a company called **Tomato.ai** and is applied to offshore agents' voices to reduce what Telus reportedly calls "accent-related friction." Labour groups have criticised the practice as deceptive and have urged mandatory disclosure, The Globe and Mail reports. According to The Globe and Mail, **Rogers** and **Bell** told the paper they have no plans to adopt similar voice-altering technology. The coverage says the rollout has provoked swift public backlash in Canada.
Marcus SchulerDeepgram released Flux Multilingual, a speech recognition model that handles 10 languages with real-time switching during conversations. The system detects language changes mid-call and processes conversational turns in under 400ms. Available as cloud API or self-hosted at the same price as English-only versions. Could simplify multilingual voice applications that previously required separate detection and routing systems.
