Ukraine and Russia exchange prohibited attacks on cities and power plants. And Zelensky proposes an energy truce to Putin, who chooses silence.

With global attention focused on the conflict between the United States and Israel against Iran, the war in Ukraine, pitting Volodymyr Zelensky and Vladimir Putin against each other, has disappeared from the headlines. Yet this military confrontation, which began in February 2022, is still ongoing and continues to reap death and destruction. At this moment, the main battlefront is that of the Black Sea, where for days Moscow and Kyiv have been exchanging heavy blows, attacking each other’s port cities.

The Kremlin, in fact, is hammering Odessa: in the last 24 hours, there have been three deaths and sixteen injured. The Ukrainian army responds by hitting Novorossiysk; according to local authorities, there are eight injured and a petroleum terminal has been damaged. The goal, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense, is to disrupt the flow of crude oil coming from Kazakhstan and heading to Europe.

Ukraine, Zelensky proposes an energy truce

Reciprocal attacks on port cities and energy infrastructure risk, as is easily understood, further distancing any diplomatic attempts to reach the long-awaited peace. This is why Zelensky has said he is ready for an energy truce: “If Russia is ready to cease attacks on our energy sector, we will be ready to respond in the same way. This is our proposal, through the Americans, to the Russian side.”

A plea that, however, seems to have fallen on deaf ears: the Russian administration led by Putin, at least for the moment, has chosen silence.
