Society Farsharotu: "Now available on YouTube: The excellent documentary "Dhiava" by Tim Salmon that discusses the Vlachs in the context of the annual journeys between summer and winter pastures of a group of shepherds from Samarina -- it is, to our knowledge, one of a kind and a must-see film for Vlachs/Aromanians and anyone interested in this little-known Balkan group that speaks a Latin-based language."

Happy New Year!

A tradition my grandmother taught me was to make a spinach pie on January 1. Hiding (boiled) coins and a cross inside the filling, when the top crust is on, it becomes a game to pick a piece with a coin or cross for good luck and health in the new year.

The first guest in the home gets a dollar coin.

I had a great aunt who used to make a lot of visits to relatives on Jan 1 for that coin.

I've often been asked if I have Polish ancestors. Nope. I do have Aromanian grandparents, from Albania and Greece. Aromanians are an ethnic and linguistic minority. They are often called Vlachs.
