Continuing my re-read of the VI Warshawski books, I’m struck by how much of the tension in the plot depends on obsolete technology or technology not having yet been invented:

- late night break-ins to photocopy documents,
- audio-tapes of notes going missing,
- taking a wrong turn while driving in an unfamiliar area and having no way of knowing where she is,
- people being out when she calls them urgently,
etc.

Makes you wonder how anyone makes a detective novel work in the 21st century.

Indemnity Only is a mystery novel written by Sara Paretsky.

The first of Sara Paretsky's V.I. Warshawski novels is an excellent, twisty noir about insurance scams in Chicago, featuring a tough female P.I. protagonist who is almost constantly asked what a woman is doing in a job like that. Thankfully, she deals with these tedious entreaties with wit or violence as appropriate. There is a strong sense of place in this case, Chicago, which is one of the reasons I read realistic hard-boiled crime. I look forward to reading more in the series currently awaiting on my shelves.
