He is less out front, less attention-grabbing, but still doing unexpected, beautiful things that make the recording more compelling, more dancy, more "gotta move".

He doesn't "do jazz," but he does jazz.

Final thoughts: Cake was critical listening in the 90s. I know thousands of bands "deserved" fame and only a few got it, but I have no issues with Cake's success; they worked as hard as anyone, were as talented and skilled as anyone. Listen to how tight they are, how their rhythms (sometimes very complicated) are surgically precise. How they find grooves where other bands might just have a "dull part of the song."

McCallum finds a groove. It's frequently staccato, and it walks all over... but it only walks where it's excellent. He plays with octaves, he syncopates, he cuts out in beautiful moments and comes back in at even more beautiful ones. He's not above just playing the root on the downbeat for a while, but he rarely says there long.

Playing his bass lines takes some skill. Maybe not #Jaco skill, but that's not (I think) his thing. He's a backing musician. His riffs could be solos in many cases, but he stays in the background supporting the band. His bass calls for my attention but I can forget about it if I want, let it fade into the mix... which is absolutely shining, as mixes go.
