Mose Allison, Back Country Suite, 1957 on Prestige

Mose Allison's debut album, recorded at Van Gelder's studio in Hackensack in March 1957, with Taylor La Fargue (bass) and Frank Isola (drums). Largely instrumental. The song titled here just "Blues" was later recorded on Live at Leeds by the Who as "Young Man Blues": Well a young man ain't got nothing in the world these days My copy—via Beverly Coin & Jewelry—is the 1983 reissue in the Original Jazz Classics series. The OJC series is a great way to find these Prestige records in good […]

Fight The Fire: Digital Reggae, Conscious Roots & Dub In Nigeria 1986-1991
2026 UK 2xLP Compilation

An incredible collection!
This focuses on Nigerian reggae and dub recordings from the late analog-to-digital transition era of 1986–1991.

These GREAT songs are loaded with primitive drum machines, synths, deep heavy bass and spring reverb, rather than the old school live band recordings of 70s roots reggae.

It is a wonderful compilation for fans of all kinds of dub and reggae like me; it’s very militant, smoky, and very underground late #80s .

I particularly love Orits Williki’s title track, and Mac Dessy Adult’s “Labrock Dub”.

Just fucking fantastic.

DAVID BOWIE
ChangesTwoBowie
1981 Canada pressing

A collection of post-1976 singles, plus five songs from earlier that did NOT appear on the initial volume of CHANGESBOWIE.

Once Bowie left RCA, his relations with them deteriorated badly. RCA still owned distribution rights to his 1969–1980 catalog for a period, but Bowie reportedly disliked RCA’s budget reissues and marketing decisions. He felt they were exploiting the catalog without proper care or consultation.

RCA then deleted most of Bowie’s catalog from print in the U.S. and U.K. around 1981–1983. This was unusual given how important and commercially viable those albums were, & for several years, his work, including THIS, was hard to come by.

It was all due to catalog management & control during a major industry transition from vinyl to CD.

Thank god for Ryko, who saved his catalog for everybody, & reissued them with care.

HOTSPRING
Obit For Sunshade
2020 Canada pressing

The perfect last spin for the end of a lovely, quiet Sunday afternoon.

This album is a fantastic #ambient #electronic atmospheric kind of record spearheaded by Canadian Scott Gailey.

It creates wonderful surroundings by using light synths and shoegazey textures, and little sprinkles of jazz here and there, very downtempo and warm.
Like an evening float on clear water or slowly driving through a desert at night.

Really nice and immersive record.

Time for another round of every Ape follower’s favorite game:

WEIRD SHIT YOU FIND INSIDE A RECORD JACKET.

This round features a clipping from some Canadian newspaper/magazine from the #70s , a kind of a “write in /ask us” kind of feature, found inside a 1971 copy of Cat Steven’s Teaser And The Firecat.

The article dives into answering the question “Is Cat Stevens Greek or English?”, posed by some yahoo in Ottawa.

The best thing however, is that ginormous ad for CRAVEN A cigarettes.
Days of yore, people.
A simpler, happier time.
When “the gentle art of milder smoking” was a god-given right.

Fantastic.

PAERISH
You're In Both Dreams (And You're Scared)
2023 U.S. Ltd. Edition pressing
Orange vinyl
Limited to 1000 copies

A fantastic rock band from France who sound like they are 25 years too late.

Big, riffing, alternative guitar rock with great melodies (production by Will Yip benefited them greatly).

This is one of my favorite rock records of the past ten years. Yes, the remind me of the killer #alternative stuff I adore from the #90s , but they also sound very much of the now as well. The songs.are just too well written.

“Daydreaming” and “Still Here” would have dominated rock radio and MTV back then. They’re such great tunes.

I hope these dudes stick around and make more records.
Their previous record Fixed It All is great too.
Unfamiliar with their independent debut Semi Finalists. Just a few songs on YT.

BASS DRUM OF DEATH
Say I Won’t
2023 U.S. pressing
Ivory vinyl

Dirty, riffy, really fun garage rock with hooks.
Has a bit of an edge to it, and I believe them fully. They mean it.

Fun tunes.

A friend gifted me this record last week.
Really digging it.
The “gifting Ape records” thing rarely goes this well.

I hope the Black Keys are paying attention.
They COULD sound like this if they didn’t suck so goddamn hard, and their records didn’t come off the most boring, soulless conveyor belt ever.

WHITEHOUSE
Wriggle Like A Fucking Eel
2002 UK 12” @ #33rpm

Those who live on the right side of the Atlantic may be more familiar with this than those in North America, as it’s believed to be about the 2001 death of Stuart Lubbock at T.V. presenter Michael Barrymore’s house in Essex (two people I do not know).

Lubbock was found dead in Barrymore’s swimming pool after a party, and the case became a huge UK tabloid scandal because of the unexplained circumstances, drug use allegations, and severe injuries found during the post-mortem. No one was ever convicted of anything.

Musically, this grotesquely theatrical.
It’s different than earlier Whitehouse music in that it’s hypnotic and groove oriented, rather than the structure-less noise of their #80s material.

Quite catchy, too, despite the ugly and disturbing underneath.

40 years ago today, May 17, 1986, Holly Dunn debuted at #86 on Billboard’s Hot Country Singles chart with “Two Too Many”. It went on to peak at #39 and spent a total of 12 weeks on the chart.

This catchy ditty caught my attention and inspired me to buy the album. It was the single right before her first Top 10, “Daddy’s Hands” and what I think most feel is her signature song.
