Vingst, on the east side of Cologne.
The earliest memories I have of this life are of Europe in the mid-1980s. Specifically, Torrejón de Ardoz, Spain.
Spaces like this, a plaza between apartment buildings where children play and kiosks sell candy and cheap toys, remind me so much of my toddler years, of playing with my toys on the pavement and eating candy whistles, strawberry puffs, and bits of nice crusty bread.
That was the last time I felt completely safe and comfortable. It was the last time I felt no strife in my family.
When we returned to the US in early 1988, I didn't remember the country I was born in. I was a foreigner there. And I always felt more at home in Europe because that's where my memories began.
All things must pass but the memory lingers. And I remain rooted to Europe by that memory from 40 years ago.
