Well what do you know – The Electronics Flea Market (EFM) has moved back to Saturday mornings and if you park in lot 2 it is free. Looks as we get to share the campus with the farmer’s market, so I get to peruse fruit & veg for the week and get my nerd on. Hopefully I will find another security appliance from a vendor I do not have yet for my test rack in the garage.

Today at the #VintageComputerFestival West, I shared how in college I used my Atari 520ST to emulate an IBM PC (using PC Ditto, as someone reminded me today) to run a PC program that emulated an IBM 3278 terminal.

It was painfully slow, but it allowed me to read out the byte sequences for the terminal's function keys across a null modem cable to an Atari 800XL.

Those codes I then plugged into a terminal program that ran natively on the 520ST (not slowly) so I could dial in from home to my university's IBM 3081 mainframe to complete my programming assignments in FORTRAN/77.

Kids today will never know the hoops we jumped through...
