The species is native to eastern and central North America, with its range extending from south-eastern Canada and the eastern United States, west to Manitoba and Utah, and as far south as eastern Mexico and Guatemala.

The vines in Osterspai (Rhein-Lahn district, Rhineland-Palatinate) are pruned once more just before budbreak.
After phylloxera almost completely destroyed viticulture in the area at the end of the 19th century, the focus gradually shifted towards fruit growing.
