"When did you start worrying about our balls, daddy?"
For the 800th horror film I've watched since Halloween 2020, I thought that I should select something quite special and so I invested in the blu-ray remaster of 'Hell Of The Living Dead' (aka Zombie Creeping Flesh, aka Virus, aka Zombi 4, aka Zombi 5: Ultimate Nightmare, aka Virus – L'inferno dei morti viventi).
I've seen it before, but previously I've only had one of those horrible Vipco transfers.
Originally conceived as an epic zombie movie, an extremely limited budget meant that the end result is...well, not epic. Also it meant a screenplay by Claudio Fragasso (Zombi 3, Troll 2) and direction by Bruno Mattei (Cruel Jaws, Island Of The Living Dead), the latter credited as Vincent Dawn.
After legions of undead are unleashed at a chemical plant, a team of gung-ho special forces types and a reporter run into zombie trouble in Papua New Guinea. That's pretty much the plot aside from a vague environmentalist and anti-colonial message. There are no lack of thrillingly violent and gory scenes, but there's also a LOT of stock footage and the whole thing is as ham-fisted as anything Bruno Mattei ever turned his hand to.
This is one of the better films of the Italian zombie cycle but that really isn't saying much.
