Vietnam’s Revolutionary Journalism: Steel Pens & Loyal Hearts
Reform
Vietnam’s journalism is undergoing "a profound transformation", according to Vietnam.net, quoting the country’s Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Phan Tam.
The measures, started by the Communist Party of Vietnam in 2019, pursue at least two objectives, writes thevietnamese.org – downsizing the press, and direct party control over Vietnam Television, the Voice of Vietnam (VoV), and Vietnam News Agency.
Official media emphasize innovation in this context. In a self-referential article, the "Voice of Vietnam" writes that
VOVWORLD has been providing training on AI, podcast production, and multimedia journalism to help young staff keep up with the changing media landscape. Many have already put those skills into practice, using technology to research information, process and edit content, and create products for websites and social media.
The party itself presents centralization under "the centralized, direct, comprehensive, and unified leadership of the Politburo and the Secretariat" over the three media including VoV as the way to deal with "a complex, multi-dimensional, and high-speed information environment, with the strong dominance of technology corporations and cross-border media forces".
Tradition
As usual at this time of the year, Vietnam’s officials celebrated Revolutionary Press Day earlier this month. One of the exhibitions on the occasion honors "the steadfast revolutionary fighters who were imprisoned in colonial and imperialist prisons but still maintained their fighting spirit, using their pens as sharp weapons on the ideological front".
The tradition of putting pens behind bars lives on: Reporters without Borders (RSF) consider Vietnam "one of the world’s biggest prisons for journalists".

Longing for BudapestI want to cruise the Danubefrom Switzerland to the Black Seadrifting from one fairytale to the next. I’m more interested in Vienna thanParis thought I certainly wouldn’tturn up my nose at the Louvreand afternoon coffee on the Seine. An overwater bungalow with a thatchedroof in the Fiji appealsmore than Bali, though the terracedrice paddies are really something. Thailand would be lovely. But Vietnam’s beckoning is stronger.A train from north to south. My family has a […]https://wvfurandroot.com/2026/06/27/that-obnoxious-officiant-clerk/
