Okay I am FASCINATED by this ad & announcement from the 1870s

I mean, Satan taking a keg – into hell – is just a throwaway background detail

"At J. W. Tufts' arctic pavilion... may be seen the largest and most magnificent soda water apparatus in the world. Its towering height of costly marbles, and its elegant architecture, (embellished with a tropical garden) ... altogether constitutes the grandest achievement of this description that has ever been accomplished.

"Its immense ice-cavern is reached by a flight of stairs from the cellar, and in its ample space, numbers of workmen perform their duties of supplying it with ice and its delicious fruit syrups, with perfect freedom. Height, 33 feet. Value $25,000. Pay it a visit."

This is my clay pipe fragment collection.

The loose ones are all from my garden (house is probably ex-farmhouse, built c. 1840). The ones in the bag are local, but from not-my-garden.

I like how they are all different thicknesses. A couple of fragments seem to be mouth-end ones. I do not have any bits that have enough intact bowl to identify much information/guess a date.

The single piece is my newest addition. I forgot about it temporarily as it was still drying from being washed.

I guess I'm sharing this because I find it interesting and probably someone on the Fediverse will find it interesting too. Or at least it'll break up doomscrolling.

I suffer from self-quantification as well. I keep a list of #thingstodo and #projects to work on. This is an interesting read, especially about Anne Lister, who is dramatized in the series #gentlemanjack

Turns out the #victorians are to blame!

"At the turn of the twentieth century, women’s ankles were covered with long skirts, silk stockings, and tight-fitting, feminine ankle boots. The majority of shoes were black, brown, or white. Part of the reason for the predominance of black and brown shoes was because people believed that darker colors made feet look smaller. Generally, leather was preferred for most footwear in the late 1890s and early 1900s. As the century progressed and women’s skirts became shorter, they began to wear showier shoes. Buttons and laces were commonly used as closures on shoes and boots in the early 1900s. The wide, curved Louis heel, which originated in the 1700s, re-emerged in the 1870s and remained the common dress-shoe heel until the mid-1920s.
