This is one of the 28, 25-meter (diameter) radio telescopes that make up the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array ("VLA"), in the desert about 50 miles west of Socorro, New Mexico [USA]. Two people in the foreground give an idea of scale.

A study based on @thenrao VLA archival data finds that Operational Data Sharing with #SpaceX has reduced L-band system temperature, and support for "earlier coordinated studies and demonstrate[s] that while StarLink’s DtC transmissions can produce measurable effects, mitigation frameworks like ODS provide effective protection to scientific data quality."

There is so much wild shit in the middle of the New Mexico desert. (The array was indeed very large) #NewMexico #VeryLargeArray

The Very Large Array - Magdalena, New Mexico (but more popularly associated with Socorro).

Contact (the film) has been dear to me for decades. I learned today that radio astronomy is still in the visual spectrum and not auditory, and the movie DID NOT depict that…but the film’s underlying message still holds powerfully. Also, Jodie Foster narrated a video for the visitor center. :D

The #VeryLargeArray is, in case you were not aware, very large indeed! Temperature is a toasty 96°F and going higher today. This is where they filmed parts of #Contact and #2010 films.

Did you know #SpaceX had to cut a deal with the #VLA’s Nat’l Radio Astronomy Observatory org to turn off all bandwidth from space as the satellites pass overhead and they pass over CONSTANTLY and they are NUMEROUS and ALL OVER THE SKY and visible at night w/naked eye.

A decade ago this week, I learned that they open the Trinity test site to the public twice a year and I was underemployed so convinced @mct to go on a roadtrip why not. The Trinity site was interesting but the real treat was stopping at the VLA the day before. I was just starting to dabble in signal processing and one of the tour guides was working on their FPGAs—I learned a lot. Also the weather was incredible. #verylargearray #newmexico https://www.flickr.com/search/?user_id=80321933%40N00&sort=date-taken-desc&text=&view_all=1&min_taken_date=1396335600&max_taken_date=1397631599
