LISTEN LOCAL
WTSA
Mastodon Post

Totally by accident, leading up to today's noon news break, I came in on the end of the first episode of WTSA's new local music program, "Listen Local."

https://wtsaradio.com/listen-local/

"Listen Local" features music by local acts and by other acts playing locally.  The show is hosted by Mitch Harrison of Next Chapter Records in Putney, Vermont. Local bands named under the "Episode One" heading are Whiskey Treaty Roadshow and Jake McKelvie and the Countertops. Non-local acts named are Colin Hay, Carsie Blanton, Ellis Paul, Lucy Kaplansky, and Amythyst Kiah.

WTSA has a mobile app. In fact, I haven't listened any other way in a very long time.

If the program has gotten a lot of fanfare so far, I am not aware of it. A search of Facebook's Southern Vermont Music Scene, for instance, turned up no references to it. Maybe this Mastodon post can help.

PAUL ASBELL
"BOUND FOR ADAMANT"

Paul Asbell “Bound For Adamant”

Vermont's Paul Asbell is a fine guitarist, possibly still best known for his days picking in the band, Kilimanjaro. I have a Kilimanjaro listening fest in my future. This track is from the various artists collection, "Music To Feed the Soul," which is a fund raiser for the Vermont Food Bank.

At first glance, I get this title as Bound for Adam Ant.

"SPECTRUM '97 BOX SET"

'THE SPECTRUM '97' BOX SET AVAILABLE FOR PRE-ORDER NOW

We're excited to announce The Spectrum ‘97, an all new 6-CD box set capturing two formative nights of Phish during their Fall Tour ‘97 apex, mixed from the band’s multitracks and mastered. It was was recorded live 12/2-12/3/97 in Philadelphia, PA and celebrates a standout run across 33 songs. It is available now for pre-order at Phish Dry Goods and will be in stores March 15. "Ghost" > "Divided Sky" from 12/2/97 is your official first listen to the new box set and you can check it out here. The box set features a glimpse backstage provided by the "Funky Bitch" soundcheck, which is included at the end of the 12/2/97 show.

December 2nd highlights began with the opener "Buried Alive" > "Down With Disease" > "Makisupa Policeman" and continued with a burning fast "Chalk Dust Torture" and "Ghost" > "Divided Sky". "Ghost" > "Divided Sky" was a one- time pairing with an electro-funk dance party "Ghost" and the only "Divided Sky" of fall tour. Set II opened with "Mike’s Song" > "Simple" > "Dog Faced Boy" > "Ya Mar" > "Weekapaug Groove", in a segment that stretched more than an hour.

The December 3rd show opened with "Punch You In The Eye" > "My Soul" and "Drowned" and closed with a unique combination of "Gumbo" > "2001" > "You Enjoy Myself". The final Spectrum ‘97 set was a non-stop affair with "David Bowie" > "Possum" > "Philly ’97 Jam" > "Prince Caspian" > "Frankenstein", followed by "Harry Hood" and a "Crossroads" encore. Bowie’s intro included references to the venue’s sports mecca status. The "Philly ’97 Jam" that developed out of "Possum" was a standalone jam with siren effects and fight bell, foreshadowing the Dayton Jam out of Tube later that week.

The Spectrum '97 was recorded by Paul Languedoc to multitrack, mixed by Jon Altschiller, and mastered by Fred Kevorkian.

BANJO DAN

All the albums by Banjo Dan and the Mid-nite Plowboys (going way back to Snowfall in 1974) along with “solo” projects by its members, plus The Sky Blue Boys, The New Bremen Town Musicians and The VT Bluegrass Pioneers are available in CD format -- and please don’t forget the fabulous DVD of the Plowboys’ farewell concert at the Barre Opera House in 2012 -- at www.banjodan.com. We also have several titles now available as downloads. I’d like to put in a special plug for “Sky’s The Limit,” an album featuring The Sky Blue Boys as a duo and as a trio with the great Carrie Cook on bass, plus a generous helping of bluegrass from the Pioneers which now includes a bonus track: The Mexicali Medley combining a snappy banjo tune by Danny Coane (Mexicali Polka) and a Tex-Mex story song by Banjo Dan (Siempre Te Amo). Also note that the CD entitled “18” featuring 18 of the best Plowboys originals selected from earlier albums, is now in reissue format -- for just $15 -- meaning the packaging is reduced but all the music is there sounding great. We feel this album captures the essence of our band better than any other single disc.
