Yesterday I started chatting with #Kimi-K2.5 on the #Ollama cloud and described a pain point. A bit of constructive back and forth, but then I had an idea so I copied the chat to #Claude and realized that I didn’t need to struggle so hard about #VMWare #VeloCloud GUI #arp tables to help me get the IP’s from the MAC addresses I had. I have #QNAP #NAS devices in every branch of my #workplace! So I set up #ssh key pairs to each QNAP, passwordless access. (1/3)

Here's my revised and tested installation #HowTo for #OPNsense on the #Velocloud EDGE 510 router - a very nice and cheap way to learn in a homelab setup

New Router Arrival!
Model: Dell EMC VEP1445

From the appearance aspect, it is always the advantage DELL has.
It is a replacement for my old router Mikrotik RB5009 when my ISP changed their BRAS infrastructure to vBRAS branding ZTE.
ZTE devices does not send legit dhcp reply so my RouterOS won't change dhcpv6-pd client status to "bound".
The pricing here in China is 1150CNY(155USD~ at the time of writing), which is priced similar to RB5009 in my local area.
In my opinion, if you have less strict requirements for noises and size, it is actually a good choice compared to R5009.
Its fan might be a bit loud for some situation while up and running. So you'd better not place it under your bed :P
Since it is an x86 mini box, you can set up many x86 virtual machines.
It also has a serial console. You do not need to buy some adapter such as ch340 or something.Just plug in the microusb port from the machine then you can access its console from your linux machine :)
From the CPU feature, it supports VT-x and VT-d so you are able to set up pcie passthrough and virtual machines.

watchdog:
Some says their edge 620/640 series boxes get turned off after several minutes due to watchdog.
Theoretically speaking, linux will feed the dogs.I'm running Debian12 on it and have not experienced this issue.
Or maybe what I am using is the VEP series which does not have such issue?
Here are the references. (

Specs:
2x10G SFP+(x553) and 6x1GbE Copper RJ45.Four of the RJ45 ports are i350, while the other two are x553.
Intel Atom C3758 [email protected]
16Gx2 ECCRAM, 16G is onboard, while the other is in the form of SODIMM ECC.
960G NGFF SATA SSD.
Access console via serial terminal, baud rate is 115200.Micro USB to USB-A will work, no need to buy CH340, etc.
It allows booting from USB and there is a USB3 port on the side of this cute little box.
Comes with a QCA9880 802.11AC adapter. It is able to create an AP with 2x80Mhz in 5Ghz and negotiation speed of 866Mbps.

Pricing:
Bought from Idlefish(A Chinese second hand market.) with the price of 1100CNY(the shop owner discounted 99CNY for my order.)
I got 32G ECCRAM and 960G NGFF configuration, which is surprising considering 8 core Denverton Supermicro motherboards are quite expensive here.
It also has a 16G EMMC, although I formatted it and did not install any OS on this eMMC chip. But it is actually helpful if you only want to install bare minimum system without messing around with SSD(it also lowers the power consumption without installing the SSD)

Mobile Edge Concept
I've been working on this project since 2020 and thought I'd share a little about the idea around a mobile edge connectivity solution. The idea started out initially around providing SD-WAN capabilities to home office workers or professional gamers who require optimized application routing.
