Turn in the investigation into the Niscemi landslide: the Public Prosecutor's Office is investigating 13 people, including the last four governors of Sicily.

The investigation into the landslide that struck Niscemi, in the province of Caltanissetta, on January 25th is intensifying. Following careful investigations, the prosecutor of Gela, Salvatore Vella, has announced that 13 people are currently under investigation to ascertain any responsibility in the disaster that has left over 1,500 displaced.

Among those investigated, according to a press conference, are also the presidents of the Sicilian Region who held office from 2010 to 2026. These include, as confirmed by Vella himself, Raffaele Lombardo, Rosario Crocetta, Nello Musumeci, and Renato Schifani.

As the magistrate explained, “our investigative activity is focusing on a period from 2010 to 2026” and has put “the last four presidents of the Sicilian Region, civil protection officials, subjects involved in combating hydrogeological instability, and the head of the consortium that was supposed to carry out the work after the 1997 landslide” in the spotlight. The suspects are accused, to varying degrees, of manslaughter and landslide damage.

The same prosecutor then recalled that the slide in Niscemi “is the largest landslide in Europe” and that “as early as 1997, there were precise indications of the measures to be taken to prevent it, but they were not implemented.” He also emphasized that “there are still 12 million euros available in the Region’s coffers for the work.”

The demise of Kindle Vella, while not surprising, is still a little sad. I was an early participant in the platform and always thought there was some real potential in the premise. 🤔

Amazon is shutting down its Kindle Vella serialized story platform in February 2025

Amazon is winding down Kindle Vella, because it hasn't caught on as it had hoped.

I was not as active on Vella as I had originally intended to be. Now it is being phased out. I’m not sure how to feel about this but there are several different platforms to publish short stories, etc. What little I have on Vella will most likely get transferred to another outlet, if I do anything at all.
Will you miss Vella?
