We really need to start teaching people not to make absurd claims like "Feeding pets a vegan diet is cruel"
Because there are MANY people, who get away with far worse things. But because you promote non-issues like 'vegan pets' and call them out, over someone who does literally abuse animals, that's a hell of a thing to do, and it begs the question of who the actual animal abuser is in this situation.
Not to mention, even a claim like "feeding pets a vegan diet is bad" needs demonstrable evidence to back it. Whether it's really bad or whether it's cruel. But because there's no evidence, it doesn't really care about how you feel about it. And neither would the pet's family.
By extension of that, this is literally crying wolf.
When something bad actually does happen, nobody will believe you. Which again, begs the question, who is the actual animal abuser here?
i got my cat (his name is zephyr) some vegan cat food from a brand called "Evolution Diet", it seems pretty legit, got him a 10 pound bag, and its coming in from amazon today! i did all the research and I'm sure it will be fine for him to eat, the food i got him has all the necessary nutrients he needs (taurine, high protein, etc), and i did research on scientific papers and stuff proving that a vegan diet is healthy for cats, I'm reasonably assured at this point that it should be healthy for him so I'm excited to do this with him :) here's to hoping it works out well.

In my defence: Sheba and I are both vegan, she comes from a local government pound, we spend on average three hours every day on walks, and I've worked from home since she came to live with me. I don't consider myself as her owner, rather as her guardian.
Unfortunately, what the author of this article describes is true for far too many companion animals.
