Its a shocking statistic, but the victims' sons were the lead suspects in 20% of all cases of women murdered by men in the UK last year.... when you add that to the around half of all women murder victims dying at the hands of the intimate partner, then as has been said before, for most women the danger is not strangers in the street, but rather the violent men in their lives.

Here is the count of violence against women & girls put together each year (this for for 2025).

The violence continues even as policing shifts its attitudes & the legal system seeks to increase successful prosecutions.

The problem remains (some) men & their attitudes towards women and girls - this goes beyond toxic masculinity, although that is part of the issue.

Men must refuse to ignore their peers' behaviour(s)!

I forgot to repost my thing about #InternationalWomensDay that I have shared every year for many years

I have some horrendous things to add to it for this year, but haven't got around to it yet.

Tl;dr don't wish me a 'happy women's day', it's meaningless and empty.
Do something.

International Women’s Day: action

I see a lot of people and orgs starting their posts with “Happy International women’s day!” (or… that’s the whole post) and, well… what? The “happy!”…

Purely a figment of your imagination

The #EpsteinFiles are appalling. No more violence against women and girls.

As a country, we must address this. The #UKGovernment has taken the pioneering step of publishing a #VAWG strategy.

In tough times, please read it and act. https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/freedom-from-violence-and-abuse-a-cross-government-strategy/freedom-from-violence-and-abuse-a-cross-government-strategy-to-build-a-safer-society-for-women-and-girls-accessible

Freedom from violence and abuse: a cross-government strategy to build a safer society for women and girls (accessible)

The Govt. has now launched it strategy to work against violence against women & girls, and helpfully Sophie King-Hill (UBirmingham) offers an overview of what it entails:

1. A major societal shift for men and boys - seeing VAWG as a public health-like issue;

2. Starting early to prevent problem behaviour - focusing on young men & boys to change attitudes early;

3. A ‘relentless pursuit of perpetrators' and;
4. Support for survivors...

Violence against women and girls: four key takeaways from a strategy that aims to change society

The goal is to halve violence against women and girls within a decade.

The Conversation

Perhaps indicative of so much of contemporary politics, while the Govt.'s new strategy to end/reduce Violence Against Women & Girls has been welcomed, campaigners on the ground already believe it is seriously under-funded.

And of course, some of the structural problems, not least of all the delays in the justice system that further harm victims while often letting perpetrators escape real sanction, are outside the strategy in any case.

BBC News

It looks like the Govt.'s strategy to reduce violence against women & girls will focus not just on victims & perpetrators but also on supporting attempts to shift attitudes among young (school age) males (not least of all due to the rising abuse in teenage relationships).

While some of this may take the form of support for parents, its not yet clear how such interventions will work (or whether they *will* work).

But at least the focus looks right!
