Suspected Assassin Preached on #SpiritualWarfare

Man charged with murdering Minnesota legislator said God would raise up apostles and prophets to correct the church.

Paul O'Donnell, June 16, 2025

"#VanceBoelter, the man arrested in connection with the killing of a Minnesota state legislator and her husband and the shooting of a state senator and his wife on June 14, is an #evangelical missionary who has preached in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in recent years.

"The FBI identified Boelter, 57, as a suspect in the killing of Rep. #MelissaHortman, a Democrat, and Mark Hortman at their home in Champlin, a suburb of Minneapolis. The suspect, who impersonated an officer to gain entry to the Hortmans’ home, was still at the crime scene when police officers arrived, but he escaped after an exchange of fire.

"Earlier, the suspect had shot and wounded Democratic state Sen. #JohnHoffman and his wife, Yvette Hoffman, at their home.

"Boelter identified himself on LinkedIn and other websites as the CEO and president of two security services companies, #PraetorianGuard Security Services and #RedLionGroup, the latter based in DRC, in Central Africa. On his LinkedIn page, which shows that he worked as a general manager at 7-11 in Minneapolis until 2021, he lists himself as open to work.

"But in a video dated February 2023, Boelter is seen preaching at La Borne Matadi, a church in Matadi, on the western coast of the DRC. In one sermon he tells the audience that 'people don’t know what sex they are' because the devil 'has gotten so far into their mind and their soul.'

"In another sermon at the church, one of three he gave from 2021 to 2023, according to Wired, Boelter said, 'They don’t know abortion is wrong, many churches,' he told the audience. 'They don’t have the gifts flowing. God gives the body gifts. To keep balance. Because when the body starts moving in the wrong direction, when they’re one, and accepting the gifts, God will raise an apostle or prophet to correct their course.'

" 'God is going to raise up apostles and prophets in America,' he added, 'to correct his church.'

"On the now-defunct website for #Revoformation, a nonprofit apparently founded by Boelter, a biography said that he was ordained in 1993 and had attended #ChristForTheNationsInstitute in Dallas, a #charismatic 'Spirit-filled Bible School,' according to its website, that helps develop ministry skills."

It couldn't be about astonishing privilege, could it? Being permitted leeway to commit violence, to use and abuse others, and enjoy impunity — while one is treated as more complex and deeper than the common lot….

Could it?

Burke:

"Brown and Black men, in contrast, are relentlessly typified when they are associated with political violence. Their individual lives rarely matter, it is rare for them to be profiled."

"They aren’t taken ever as representing movements or institutions or social categories, and their causality is never attributed to other people except family members who might have hurt them or ignored them or offered them their first gun."

We all know, of course, that straight white men are the most persecuted people on the planet. So maybe their experience of marginalization makes them uncommonly complex, people of great depth?

"There are frequently heroic efforts by their profilers to make them out to be 'lone nuts', serial killers whose ideology is seen as just being a schtick like sending cryptograms and letters to the police, whose only motives are personal, in their madness and sadness and failure, in the circumstances of their lives."

Burke says,

"I’m not against individuating Vance Boelter, against understanding the distinctive human life he has led. But it is impossible to miss that people like Boelter, like Dylann Roof, like Timothy McVeigh, like Brenton Tarrant, like Anders Breivik, so often seem to warrant being written about in this way."

When white men in the US commit mass murder in service of right-wing ideology, it's never because of the category or group to which they belong:

It's never because they're Black.

It's not ever because they're Muslim.

Never due to their being gay or trans.

Straight white men are complex. They have depth. They're individuals. We just don't know why they do what they do when they kill people due to their right-wing ideological commitments.

"a far-right white man who engages in political violence that could fairly be called “terrorist” always warrants individuation after they have committed their crimes. They are never abstracted, never made to stand in for a category of persons whose ideologies and identities are seen as a general danger. The explanation of their violence is always located in the particular and peculiar, in the specifics of their biographies."
