This is one of my favourite public light art works, straightforwardly named Traffic Light Tree by Pierre Vivant, in the middle of a roundabout in London. It's a fun but also a tad uncanny combination of flickering city life and, err... nature? And yes, it has confused some people, who thought it was an actual traffic light.

Here's the skeleton by Tavaresh Strachan, mentioned in the previous post. 2019 was a very good year for light as a material of art in Venice Biennale. Some interesting times, indeed, I'd say.

Ever since I saw a floating neon skeleton by Tavares Strachan in Venice in 2019, I've been a fan. I was happy to see his work You Belong Here (2024) in Winter Light of Southbank Centre in London last year, even if this artwork was a tad more traditional, following the long path of words in neon(like materials). The message, however, wasn't as laconic as it tends to be in this genre, but simple, sincere and warm.

Tate Modern's Turbine Hall is such an awesome and huge place that it tends to turn artworks placed in it quite sublime as well. This suits Máret Ánne Sara's Goavve-Geabbil well, height being an integral part of one of its central elements. Combined to its irregular and even bestial building blocks, the straight white lights brought a stout contrast to this pillar-like part of the artwork, adding to its solemnity and serenity.

There's a cute local light art festival Loiste in January in Ylöjärvi, Finland, curated by Jussi Kamunen. One of my reasons to go there was to see The Last Disco Animals by Anni Arfmann live. Even though I thought (as per usual) that some fine-tuning of light cues would have benefitted the artwork, it was still pretty good - especially the play of light in the engravings of the acrylic was something I haven't seen before. Impressive! Also the discotheque ambience combined with known loss of species was somewhat eerie, which for me is a good thing.

Site-specific art course, part 4: Tuomas Vainionpää's piece builds on the neo-brutalist architecture of the University of Arts' new building, twisting it and the audience all very cubistic.

Site-specific art course, part 3: Toivo Yrjölä's 'Lattia. Ei bileitä varten.' (Floor. Not for parties.) comments the pet peeve of Theatre Academy: the lobby's floor.

The floor is in such a bad shape that dancing is indeed forbidden on it, for safety reasons, thus making parties quite impossible. Yrjölä's laconic disco still keeps going on, with music that sounds like it's coming from underground (because it kind of is).

Site-specific art course, part 2: Viivi Tammelin's Irti kontekstista (Out of Context) was inspired by the weird window-like niche that mostly go unnoticed even if it's by the most busy corridor of the building. Tammelin designated the spot with animated eyes, and headlines taken out of their context, providing a sense of oddness and some giggles as well.

The light art piece Geopolitical Burger by Anne Roininen, first seen at Thesmallest Vallila festival, is going places! To Denmark, Ringkøbing and Videbæk, to be exact, adventuring in local foodstores. The Burger is part of Media Art Days festival, based in Brogården Kulturvæksthus.
