[broadly, a 'seismic' listening technique could help researchers map water movement, moisture levels in soil, with these researchers at Caltech have figured out a way to use vibrations from passing cars to see how much water sits directly beneath the ground’s surface…]

UNSW has a field station in the Central West of New South Wales. A former pastoral science property on Wiradjuri country, since 2010 a groundwater research facility. And since last year, an Australian Critical Zone Observatory. It also has spectacular sunrises and a shed of my dreams. I'm just back from there, with some photos in case #fieldworkthursday is a thing.

Event-based groundwater recharge: drip observations reach new depths in mine tunnels

Tomorrow afternoon at #EGU24, my colleague Wendy Timms has this poster all about how we are measuring groundwater being replenished by placing loggers in tunnels, mines and other underground spaces.

Here are the details:

Abstract EGU24-13495

We're happy to announce the publication of a novel #paper entitled

“Heat transport from atmosphere through the subsurface to drinking-water supply pipes”

http://dx.doi.org/10.1002/vzj2.20286

authored by

Elisabeth Nissler, Samuel Scherrer, Holger Class, Tanja Müller, Mark Hermannspan, Esad Osmancevic, and Claus Haslauer

We designed and implemented a novel boundary condition at the interface between the #atmosphere and the #subsurface. With this boundary condition we demonstrate that we are able to simultaneously predict #temperatures and water content in the subsurface driven by hydro-meteorological parameters.

Mostly, my research is in the vadose zone. I spend a lot of time in the vadose zone. But
what is the vadose zone?

Thankfully there's a blog for that
