Florida’s surgeon general said Sunday that he had not weighed the cost – in terms of infections, hospitalizations or deaths – of ending vaccine mandates in the state. But scientists who have done those calculations say those costs may be high.
Republican officials in Florida want to eliminate all vaccine mandates for schools, but it's not that simple. Legislative action will be needed to nix requirements for shots like polio and measles and if the move succeeds, it will likely lead to worse disease outbreaks and a teacher shortage.
