Language, power and the price of entry

The same logic that protects Hungarians in Ukraine leaves Russian in the cold. Language policy, it turns out, has a foreign policy.

Thai court sentences two Uyghur men to death for 2015 Bangkok bombing

Twenty people were killed and 120 injured in the attack at the Erawan Shrine, a popular tourist destination

The #deathpenalty is wrong in principle, even if these men are guilty - & there has to be some doubt as to their guilt, given that they are #Muslim #ethnic #Uyghurs charged with killing #Chinese #tourists, when #Thailand seems all-too-anxious to appease #Communist #China, & has even deported Uyghurs back to China.

I think most countries abandoned forced sterilization after WW2, but I hear it's making a comeback in the USA as well. Critical support for the comrades in DHS, I guess.

So well-said, Kaixi! The free world has lost a free city - #HongKong. And the sacrifice of the #Uyghurs. The world should remember it!

this is nothing short of a genocide. maybe not necessarily in its direct sense, but a cultural & linguistic one - and I think it's even worse because when the culture & language are wiped out, then ethnicity/nation completely ceases to exist.

What an argument. #China, which produces solar panels partly through exploitation of #Uyghurs and their homeland's natural resources, can somehow support the #green transition in a region where #Indonesia is exploiting #Papuans and their resources.

Western countries are increasingly confronting alleged Chinese transnational repression, prompting calls for democracies to coordinate a collective response against Beijing's overseas intimidation networks. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/commentary/2026/05/27/world/democracies-oppose-chinese-transnational-repression/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #commentary #worldnews #uk #us #norway #humanrights #hongkong #uyghurs #tibetans
In a single day, three democracies pushed back against Chinese transnational repression

That three liberal democracies acted against Beijing's long arm on a single day was not coordinated – but perhaps it should have been.
