@mason @markmetz "I still miss Usenet." - Usenet needs reviving! As a small contribution to this process, I operate a web interface to non-binary Usenet at https://newsgrouper.org .

Newsgrouper: A web interface to Usenet discussion groups

Read and post to Usenet Newsgroups with a simple web interface.

@markmetz I still miss Usenet.

Plus side: we still have mailing lists. Not quite as freeform as Usenet, but more topically structured than the Fediverse.

There's probably room for Fediverse clients that can slice up posts topically so I could say "show me rec.arts.int-fiction" and have it show me appropriate things. But for Heaven's sake, not large language models.

I'd have to understand the math more, but would Bayesian classification be compatible with this? I've never read about it being used for an ever-changing set of queries, mostly just static "spam or not".

What would be missing from this of course would be the poster's intent in choosing a newsgroup.

I guess I still just miss Usenet.

(Gerne #linux )

Back to the future - Interacting with threadiverse communities through Usenet / NNTP

A few months ago I threw this question out into the void - “what if you could access the fediverse through your Usenet reader??” and got almost no response. Still, the idea had lodged in my brain and wouldn’t go away so this weekend I caved in and built the thing. Hat tip to the author of the excellent nntpserver package that did all the hard stuff.

I look forward to seeing someone’s screenshots of fediverse posts on a Commodore 64, some day.

This will be released as a part of PieFed 1.7, coming soon.

Much of Usenet is indeed a wasteland these days, but not all of it. One counterexample would be uk.d-i-y - you can take a quick peep there via https://newsgrouper.org/uk.d-i-y . Another is the group for my preferred programming language - comp.lang.tcl . 😎

Linux 4/94 ?
