@Bronwyn I had 'mismatched' dining room chairs (well, I had three different pairs of chairs, so each chair did match one other chair) until I inherited my grandparents' dining room set.

I do not believe having matched chairs is all that important, but if you are looking for a matched set, you could try visiting what are called 'used furniture' stores. These businesses are similar to antique stores, but the items for sale are not as old or upmarket. Often they sell traditional/transitional postwar furniture (1950s-1980s) of very good quality. The stock is acquired primarily from estate sales, so often the pieces have had only one owner and are in excellent condition. The furniture is not as fashionable as 'midcentury modern' so the prices can be quite reasonable and usually a third of the price of purchasing new.
