Record of the Day

Edith Frost - Telescopic

Is @edithfrost still on here these days? Found this in the wild at a small record shop in Putney, #Vermont. It’s been well played but in good shape. This is very good record. Sorta roots-ish, sorta dark, sorta dream pop. Were there ever liner notes with?

Christmas - In Excelsior Dayglo

Was having a discussion on here a couple days ago about Volcano Suns, which made me think of one of my other favorite Boston bands from 85, 86. I have lots of thoughts about this regional era of US indie rock, but suffice to say every time I listen to this record I reminded how I played the hell out it & exactly why.A terrific record.

J Dilla - Donuts

This showed up in 2 unrelated youtube videos this past week so I’m taking it as a sign to spin it.

Vivien Goldman - Resolutionary

Inaugural spin. New old stock from ‘16. If you’ve ever wondered what was the deal w/ the woman who sang on Flying Lizards’ “Money” here’s yr answer: made a bunch varied & cool music. A terrific record. Comp of a solo 12”, 2 Lizards tracks, & another project, Chantage. Touches on dub, minimal electronic, world music. Great liner notes.

Pointer Sisters - Steppin

Peace out, Anita Pointer.

This record has some wild stylistic swings on it. I’ll be honest, there’s a couple songs that are really not my thing. But it does close with an Allen Toussaint song, “Going Down Slowly” that is 7 minutes of pure badass. & they sing the hell out of it.

Eddy Grant - Going for Broke

Not knowing anything outside ’Electric Avenue’ (still a banger track) I really hoped I’d find a forgotten gem here. Alas, not a good album. Despite his terrific voice, it suffers from being one dude in a studio in the 80s. None of the songs are strong enough to overcome the production. It’s like demos for a much better recorded with a full band.

The Damned - The Black Album

tbh I’m not super familiar with a lot of The Damned deep cuts. I have this & an anthology. But back in 84/85 a friend made me a compilation tape that I played a lot. Definitely one of the bands I wish I’d made more of an effort to see in concert. I think I’m going to go deep on these.

The Police - Ghost in the Machine

This is a very good, very expensive sounding record. This copy I scored is near pristine.

Labelle - Chameleon

Not sure how Labelle rate outside Lady Marmalade, but around our household these are classics. 3 absolutely banger albums.

The #bass playing on this is 🤯

Killing Joke - Brighter Than a Thousand Suns

Hard to overstate how much that 1st wired my musical taste for the next 20 or so years. This record is pretty different thing. KJ laid down a template in terms of sound for so much alternative music that immediately followed it; how much is this reclaiming this sound from bands that had greater success with it, or them following trends?
