Happy 105th birthday to Thousand Oaks resident and veteran Vernon Ricks! Dozens of police, firefighters, fellow veterans, and friends and family turned out to help him celebrate his big day.

When WWII broke out, “only two people from Burbank got drafted, and I was one of them,” he recalled. In the Army, Corporal Ricks was an anti-aircraft gunner who took part in campaigns in New Guinea and the Philippines. He earned two Bronze Stars and a ribbon for helping liberate the Philippines.

Thank you for your service, and happy birthday Cpl. Ricks!

Female soldier becomes the first woman to compete in the grueling Army Ranger contest

A female Army Ranger for the first time competed in the annual Best Ranger Competition, and her two-soldier team finished the grueling three-day event over the weekend and came in 14th overall. First Lt. Gabrielle White, and her teammate, Capt. Seth Deltenre, were among the 16 teams that made it through the final events. Ranger teams compete for accolades as the best of the elite military force. All together, 52 teams competed and all of the others were made up of only male soldiers. In previous years the Army would likely have noted the historic first in a story or press release, but the Defense Department has banned anything that touts diversity and equity.
