I did earn a promotion to E-5 (SP/5, with the same pay as a sergeant) during my time in South Vietnam. A General who inspected my work, and who liked what he saw, said that I should volunteer to extend my tour in Vietnam. I said: "they would have to promote me first." I went before a promotions board, I answered their questions to their satisfaction, and I was promoted. #USArmy
