TIL there is an open source project creating APIs and data frameworks for micro-mobility within cities called the Mobility Data Specification (#MDS). Complete with APIs for the provider to provide operational info/stats, and for the local government, providing geofence data and other operational requirements.

They say it can be used for scooters, bikes, carshare, and even delivery robots. Neat.

Hey friends, I have started a blog!

Decided to start a little repo of writing to practice this type of expression, and to hopefully provide some interesting content around things I'm studying or interested in.

This is my first exploration into anything like this, so feedback is always welcomed on my writing, the website's setup and config, or anything else!

Hope you enjoy my first piece where I attempt to explain what #urbantechnology even is.

In a #networkscience class this semester specifically focused on urban contexts... only our second week in and we are discussing closeness/betweeness centrality, edge betweeness, and how all of this relates to transportation networks. Very broad, tough to grasp concepts for a beginner like me, but a real world example of edge weight regarding roads before and after floods made it all click for me. Can't wait for more!

When approaching an unsignaled pedestrian crossing on a road in OsmAnd driving navigation, the navigation voice announces "Attention, pedestrian crossing ahead!"

Such a simple feature that if implemented in Google Maps could probably save a ton of lives. Auto manufacturers are starting to deploy these kinds of "in-car warnings", but a friendly reminder that we can all do it with #Opensource data. Next step could be emergency service vehicle alerts, etc

Chicago CTA utilizing #OpenStreetMap for real time location display inside their busses! Love this feature!

Chicago still sells paper transit tickets, but magically you can still tap to pay!

RFID embedded in the paper card... cool! Environmentally cool? I don't know, maybe better than requiring plastic cards like LA? I would like to think making plastic required encourages people to keep the card longer... someone should study this!

Hey @ai6yr , just curious, how do you run your emergency dispatch bots like @chp_losangeles_bot ? Is there an API out there that has the calls? Interested in learning more about these if they exist for my #urbantechnology studies. Anything you have helps. :)

Attended the last of the A2 Downtown planning meetings, and asked about #VMT. Turns out the city gets their seasonal traffic counts from Google, who sells them corridor specific data on how many cars take the roads.

I'm curious to know how this works... How much of this is just Google Maps/Waze/Phone pings, and how much of this is possibly what @pluralistic 's thread this week was about (cars reporting their location)
