How I Paint: Pirates
After seeing the UrbanMech inflatable at Gen Con 2023, I decided to paint one of my miniatures to match it. Both the inflatable and the original plushie have the same general color scheme. They have an orange upper body, grey legs, and then red and green accents.

I ended up using the following paints to try to replicate this look:
Start with a grey base coatPaint the legs Skavenblight DingePaint the upper body Jokaero OrangePaint accents in Wazdakka Red and Loren ForestPaint metal bits with LeadbelcherWash with Agrax EarthshadeRe-layer the leg panels with Skavenblight DingeLayer the orange panels with Trollslayer OrangeRe-layer the red and green panels with Wazdakka Red and Loren ForestRe-layer the metal bits with LeadbelcherPaint skulls and crossbones (see below)Edge highlight the grey with Stormvermin FurEdge highlight the orange with Fire Dragon BrightEdge highlight the red with Squig OrangeEdge highlight the green with Straken GreenI went with blue glass for the cockpit to match the inflatable. For that I used Macragge Blue, Altdorf Guard Blue, Calgar Blue, and White Scar.
For the skulls and crossbones, I used a small brush to paint a circle with an X beneath it in White Scar. Then I used Black Templar contrast paint to add eye and nose dots on the circle. They are pretty rough, but I’m happy with how they look at arm’s length.
Some time after I finished the UrbanMech, I ended up deciding to run pirates in the Triangle BattleTech Tournament. In order to do that, I painted a Shadow Cat and a Blackjack to match my UrbanMech.
Over last weekend, my daughter and I started a Hot Spots: Hinterlands campaign, and I picked the Shadow Cat and UrbanMech as my starting mercenary force: Kate’s Cutlasses. As our campaign progresses and our rival mercenary units grow, I expect to end up painting a couple more minis in this scheme.
