Musings on #losangeles, my hometown.

Biodiversity. I live near the foothills of the San Gabriel mountains. I wake up usually about a half hour before dawn. The birds wake at the same time, a rancorous symphony reminiscent of the tropics, so many types of birdsong that it's difficult to pick out individual species. Wrens, jays, hummingbirds, cockatiels, mourning doves, owls, crows, ravens, and the occasional red tailed hawk. More.

My garden is a hodgepodge of things I've planted that have run riot, gentle bushes that have to be coaxed into comfort, and all varieties of indigenous fauna coming back home. Banana, grapefruit, orange, lemon, plum, apricot, pomegranate, passion fruit, strawberry. Manzanita, sage, nasturtium, poppies, mallow, oaks. Garlic, onions, buckwheat, sabras.

Fence lizards, every spring the tiny inch long young wandering on warm rocks. Squirrels on the wires, in the oaks, on the fence. Opossums, in the street and along the shadowy runs beneath the bushes. Wood rats, scourge or simply neighbors, everywhere there is safety and cover. Coyotes meandering down the street, howling in their chorus from neighboring hills, setting the dogs baying in kinship. Dragonflies and damselflies nesting in the pond, bees settling on the water plants for rest and a drink. Spiders in the eaves, in the dark places, in the trees, watchful. Worms, sowbugs, earwigs, ants, maggots, recycling. Butterflies and moths, passing through. Bees, humming in the pre dawn cactus blossoms. Bees, murmuring around the fruit trees and mallows. Bees, meandering amongst the trailing vines of nasturtium. Bees, adding their droning zen to the sound bath.

The three of us humans, representing birthplaces almost on opposite sides of the earth, three dogs, three fish.

All this in 4500 square feet. A shotgun sliver of Los Angeles, 25 feet wide by about 180 deep, on a hill, in one of the largest cities on earth.

Another snapshot from my trip to Graz - looking town at the busy bank of the Mur from Erherzog-Johann bridge on a sunny day.

I liked how the lockets attached to the railing of the fridge framed the person sitting on the concrete steps below so nicely. Since everything around them was so busy and so colourful, their calm and the black outfit really made them stand out.
