The light is about to turn, as it always does. It will do so no matter if you try to help it along or not, but it's better for you if you assist a little. One day, these pine cones might be tall trees, and you can help them thrive, too. But first, enjoy the solstice. (Picture taken in Seattle's Discovery Park today.)

...that time of the year when you're happy about any bit of green that isn't moss. Although moss can be very beautiful, too. One sees more and more bamboo in Seattle yards. Maybe it's because these plants can deal with both a lot of rain and the long, dry springsummerfalls we have here in recent years. And they still look splendid and stand up straight. We all need to be more like bamboo!

Each time I remember to walk on the right side of a certain street in this #Seattle neighborhood south of Madison and east of MLK Way, I'm amazed by what a bunch of silent rocks in a wall can do together in the right light. Take a #walk, everybody! #walkingheals #urbanhiking #novemberlight

Took a long #hike along the #Rhein or #Rhine river and more southerly neighborhoods of #Köln or #Cologne. Early on, I came past the so-called Overstolzenhaus, built for a family of luminaries and nobles in 1230 and marvelously restored; it's the one with the many arches. Later, I enjoyed a brick-based port building from the 19th century. Before I left the river front, I watched a dramatic sky over the Rhine and the South Bridge, where people and trains cross. #urbanhiking #walkingheals
A post card from #Cologne or #Köln, my hometown. I'm visiting after not having been here since 2006. It's fascinating to see certain things again, many for the first time, and to recognize certain things even as you know that what you remember doesn't quite exist any more. The city is stressful and crowded, but in many places also beautiful and inspiring. #travel #walkingheals #urbanlife #urbanhiking
A wild wall lit up as a surprise in a fairly dark corridor near the Leopold Park not far from the European parliament in #Brussels, and a few minutes after that we happened to see that lovely passage into a quiet, inviting street we might explore another time, but not today. #walkingheals #urbanhiking #Bruxelles #Belgium #Belgique #travel #art #wallart
Happy #Caturday. Here's a kitty in her window in the St. Gilles neighborhood of Brussels. #CatsofMastodon #lifebetterwithcat #Bruxelles #Belgique #Belgium #urbanhiking #walkingheals
An excursion to #Anvers or #Antwerpen. Beautiful, luxurious, festive, splendid buildings, urban windmills, an over-the-top train station combining older and new elements, and masses of tourists and people oozing through downtown areas. The #city is in many ways gorgeous, sparkly in a way #Brussels is not. Amazing what #colonialism, subjugating parts of a continent, and robbing its diamonds and other treasures, was able to accomplish. #architecture #travel #Belgique #Belgium #urbanhiking
Three favorites among the many gorgeous houses we see in #Brussels. Grateful for all of them. They bring so much joy even to a hot, potentially dreadful walk. #Bruxelles #Belgique #Belgium #walkingheals #architecture #urbanhiking #beautifulcity #art
