The peasants rose in rebellion because the emperor is trying to make Upper Austria catholic again, with the help of the duke of Bavaria. They try to install catholic priests and governeur Herberstorff lets the local rebels of Frankenburg play dice for their lives in 1625 - the losers are hanged.
After careful preparations, the rebellion starts in May 1626, and now in June, the rebels have already captured the important towns of Wels and Steyr and are besieging Freistadt. It's looking good - for now.

It's some thousand protestant peasants (or fewer) in front of the walls against 150 soldiers under the command of a bavarian captain inside.
But there are also town citizens sympathizing with the rebels (who are locals) and food is running out in Freistadt...

I have a wall calendar printed every year with my own work. The photograph for February is a street scene observed in Steyr, Upper Austria, in 1982 (around this time of the year) - when I was still very young, the world was full of endless possibilities and the future was far, far away.
Goodness, this was 44 years ago!
The photograph was conceived on Agfapan 100 film.
