While researching #LemuelShattuck hospital, I came across some stories about how some #TinyHouses set-up in the hospital's parking lot were HELPING with #Homelessness, but were dismantled because the funding ran out... WTF!

"Funding has run out for two Massachusetts housing programs that provide shelter to those who previously lived at the #TentEncampment near the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and Melnea Cass Boulevard [#MassAndCass]. While the state plans to close one, officials are discussing ways to keep the second program open.
"A temporary cottage community on the grounds of Lemuel Shattuck Hospital in #JamaicaPlain will shutter at the end of July, a spokesperson from the state Executive Office of Health and Human Services said. The community is no longer accepting new residents, and the nearly two dozen people housed on the grounds now will be offered alternative housing.
" 'We are committed to ensuring there is no break in services and no break in housing for those who choose to continue forward,' said Deirdre Calvert, director of the Department of Public Health’s Bureau of Substance Addiction Services.
"The cottages’ closure was first reported by WBUR.
"The cottages, which included a bed and small living area for individuals or couples, opened in 2022 amid the opioid crisis that led to a homeless encampment near the intersection known as Mass. and Cass. Since then, the community has sheltered more than 100 people, state officials said. The cottages, administered by Commonwealth Care Alliance, offered support for people in addiction while helping them transition to more permanent housing."

It's a fun game of pretend. I have a COVID, I'm disabled, I have asthma, I am homeless.
But I get to keep applying for jobs while I pretend I'm perfectly OK. And the second work starts, I'll be working full-time with COVID, as if I'm perfectly OK.
If I want to survive, the only way to do so is to act like I'm perfectly OK.

"This week, four members of the #OglalaSioux Tribe were detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Minneapolis. One person has died from exposure. The cold is severe, and the stakes are life and death.
"In the Phillips neighborhood, at the heart of one of the largest Urban Indian communities in the country, Indigenous-led organizations are responding where systems have fallen short.
"The Minnesota Indian Women’s Resource Center and #NenookaasiOzhige have opened a culturally grounded, low-barrier warming shelter to provide safety, warmth, and protection for unsheltered Native relatives."

My friend, Maria, rides public transit. And she's always telling me stories about people she's met there. Like D, who she brings sandwiches, water, and dog food to each week.
My ex had given me a really nice, warm hat, and I asked her to pass it on to someone who needed one. I had just found a $20 in a pocket, so I gave her that, too.
She lives her life like this. She always has, and I love hearing her stories about her commuter community.

I'm struck how so much of the survival of #unsheltered people depends on the thinnest resources: research sharing within unhoused communities, mutual aid efforts like the ones mentioned in this article, ARPA money that is running out.
