GENÈVE (ANP) - De VN-mensenrechtenchef Volker Türk roept Israël op om de nieuwe doodstrafwet in te trekken. Hij noemt de wet in strijd met de internationale mensenrechten en de toepassing ervan een oorlogsmisdaad.
Het Israëlische parlement nam maandag de omstreden wet aan, waarmee Palestijnen die een moord plegen met een terroristisch motief de doodstraf riskeren. Türk noemt de wet "duidelijk in strijd" met het internationaal recht.
Het VN-mensenrechtenkantoor noemt de Israëlische wet in strijd met het internationaal recht, omdat de doodstraf binnen negentig dagen moet worden uitgevoerd, en de wet geen mogelijkheid tot gratieverlening biedt.
Als de doodstraf daadwerkelijk ten uitvoer wordt gebracht op Palestijnen is dat "een oorlogsmisdaad", zegt Türk.
