Looking out from the inside of what is left of the 175 year old Union Corner Building in central Glasgow. From this angle, you can see the shattered windows of the eastern facade of the neighbouring Station Hotel (on the left of the image), and this is when you realise how close the fire must have come to jumping the gap into that building, and from there into the main body of Central Station.

A before and after shot of the Union Corner Building in central Glasgow. The upper shot was taken in 2025, the lower one this morning, showing how little of it remains standing following Sunday's fire.

Whatever happens at this site, whether the facade of lost building can be reconstructed (my own preference), or if a new one is constructed on it, it's essential that it fits not only with the neighbouring environs, but also maintains these architectural traditions. Anything other than this will risk destorying a key aspect of the city's Victorian streetscape which helps make it such a unique place to live and to visit.

One of the main aspects of Glasgow's traditional architecture, and one of the things which makes the city architecturally distinct, is its feature corners. Corner sites are often marked by grand buildings topped by corner towers and/or domes (see top right and bottom left pictures), and the Union Corner Building was part of this tradition (top left).

It's the first street many people see after arriving at Central Station and Union Corner is on two major sightlines through the city centre (south down Renfield Street and west along Gordon Street from Buchanan Street). This means the choice of building for this location will have a major impact on how the city looks and feels.

Once the dust finally settles after the fire in the Union Corner Building in Glasgow (top left), attention will undoubtedly turn to how to fill the gap it has left behind.

This is an important location for the city, and Gordon Street is packed with many magnificent Victorian buildings (top right, bottom left and bottom right).

Many of them were still on scene this morning, such as this group, watched over by Kenny Hunter's 2001 Citizen Firefighter statue outside the nearby Central Hotel, which is a memorial to all firefighters past and present. Thank you to you all.

A final post on the Union Street fire for now. Thanks to all the firefighters from the Scottish fire and Rescue Service who worked tirelessly late into the night to ensure the fire was as contained as possible and didn't spread to the surrounding buildings of Central Station, which would have been even more devastating to the city's architectural heritage.

This is not a good scene to wake up to, but at least no one in the building or any firefighters were hurt. The neighbouring Central Station, a key element of Victorian Glasgow and an important hub for modern communters, is closed, but is hopefully unharmed.
