#UncleTomsCabin, published on #ThisDayInHistory in 1852, was a milestone in the history of #abolitionism, showing some of #slavery's horrors to a wide audience. It also entrenched many #racist stereotypes of #Black people; #HarrietBeecherStowe's family wanted them sent to Africa.

Ali Khamenei regularly talked about his favorite western books, Les Misérables, The Grapes of Wrath and Uncle Tom's cabin.

He told tactical thinkers in the Iranian regime to read Uncle Tom's cabin in particular to fully grasp how evil the US is.

When Khamenei said "this book [Uncle tom's cabin] still lives"... I don't think he meant that figuratily.

From all oh Khamenei's statements on Black Americans he clearly means it literally.

Happy Juneteenth everyone! What I'm reading this week. It is a bit dated in its stereotyping, but had been on my American Canon TBR list for some time - so I thought I'd make up my own mind. First impressions... no less heart-wrenching after 172 years. #booksky #juneteenth #UncleTomsCabin #blacksky

March 20, 1852 - Harriet Beecher Stowe's influential novel about slavery, Uncle Tom's Cabin, or Life Among the Lowly, was first published in book form by J.P. Jewett of Boston. The text had previously been serialized in the anti-slavery newspaper, the National Era.

10,000 copies were sold in the first week, 300,000 within the first year. The many different editions published in Europe sold an aggregate of one million copies in the first year.

It was the second best-selling book of the 19th century after the Bible.

Uncle Tom's Cabin was soon published in dozens of languages.

I learned about Joshia Henson a few years ago. Given the strong connections with Western Kentucky (Owensboro, specifically), this is something we should have learned in school, but did not.
