Oorlog in Sumerië
Spijkerschrifttekst van Enmetena van Lagash over de oorlog met Umma (Louvre, Parijs)Het schijnt voor te komen, en het is natuurlijk heel bijzonder, dat mensen dagenlang niet denken aan het conflict tussen de Sumerische stadstaten Lagash en Umma. Het is een van de oudst-gedocumenteerde oorlogen uit de geschiedenis. De inzet was niet gering: door het onduidelijke verloop van de grens tussen de twee staatjes was de watervoorziening onzeker en dus ook de welvaart.
Dit was de menselijke dimensie van het conflict, waar wij iets van begrijpen. Er was echter een tweede dimensie. Als het land eigendom was van de stadsgoden, dan was dit dus tegelijk een conflict tussen twee goden. Gelukkig waren er altijd verstandige goden, zoals het hoofd van het Sumerische pantheon, Enlil. Diens vertegenwoordiger op aarde, koning Mesalim van Kish (pakweg 2550 v.Chr.) stelde de grens vast en plaatste daar een stèle. Probleem opgelost – althans voorlopig.
Ten oorlog
Een halve eeuw later, dus ergens rond 2500 v.Chr., probeerde Pabilgešgaltukunoot Hoe verzin je zo’n naam? van Umma de grens te verleggen, maar de koning van Lagash, Ur-Nanshe, versloeg hem en nam hem zelfs gevangen. De mannen van Umma waren echter niet overwonnen, hergroepeerden onder een zekere Ush, vielen Lagash binnen en verplaatsten de grensstèle. Althans, zo lezen we op de Gierenstèle van Eanatum, die een generatie later koning zou zijn te Lagash en als zodanig misschien niet de allermeest betrouwbare bron is.
Dramatis personaeAanvankelijk probeerde Lagash de hernieuwde grensschending diplomatiek op te lossen. Ur-Nanshes zoon en opvolger Akurgal stuurde dus ambassadeurs, maar Ush van Umma stuurde die onverrichter zake terug. Misschien herkennen we hier een despotische vorst, want Ush verspeelde kort daarna het vertrouwen van zijn onderdanen en werd door hen gelyncht. De nieuwe heerser in Umma was Enakalli.
Eanatum
Juist op dat moment volgde in Lagash Eanatum zijn vader Akurgal op. We zijn inmiddels aanbeland rond het jaar 2475. Met een hoop geweld dwong de nieuwe koning van Lagash zijn vijand Enakalli van Umma om de grens weer te leggen waar die, althans volgens de bewoners van Lagash, behoorde te liggen. Eanatum zou 36.000 vijanden hebben gedood. Volgens de Gierenstèle dan, die eindigt met de eden die de verslagen heerser van Umma zou hebben afgelegd.
Het conflict was echter nog niet voorbij. Een generatie later viel Umma Lagash opnieuw aan, waar koning Eanatum inmiddels was opgevolgd door Enannatum. De mannen van Umma, geleid door Ur-Lumma, hadden inmiddels een nieuw pressiemiddel: ze sloten de kanalen af waarmee Lagash van water werd voorzien. Lagash week echter niet. Kroonprins Entemena versloeg de mannen van Umma en doodde Ur-Lumma. Diens opvolger, van wiens naam we alleen de lettergreep Il kennen, sneed de watertoevoer opnieuw af.
De afloop
Entemena, inmiddels koning van Lagash, besloot dat de oplossing bestond uit het graven van een kanaal, om water vanaf de Tigris naar Lagash te brengen. Probleem: dit water was wat zouter. De regio verziltte.
De gevolgen waren catastrofaal. In Entemena’s dagen, eind vijfentwintigste eeuw v.Chr. bestond de oogst van Lagash voor zeker een zesde uit tarwe, maar rond 2100 v.Chr. was dat gereduceerd tot een vijftigste. De koningen van Lagash verplaatsten hun residentie naar het nabijgelegen Girsu, waarover ik onlangs blogde. De regio van Lagash is op geologische kaarten nog altijd herkenbaar als verzilt.

We found not only the stone blocks from walls and floor of a #Napatan temple of #Amun of #GemAton #Kawa but also enigmatic complex of chambers covered with wall paintings and inscriptions dated probably to around 1276 CE One of the paintings presents king David of Makuria in intimate and dynamic scene with #archangel Michael and #Christ kissing the hand of the latter and probably begging for protection of the city of #Tungul (Old Dongola) against the wrath of #Mamluks unique for #Christian art The other painting shows #MotherOfGod in a unique, uncommon way and as far as I'm concerned unknown in #Christian #iconography holding a book in one and a cross in other hand and dressed in kind of monochromatic greyish robe".
