Imagine a man who spent his entire life deciphering the secret languages of history, from medieval manuscripts to the hidden codes in pop culture. This was Umberto Eco. As a world-renowned semiotician, he understood better than anyone how symbols and words shape our collective reality. But toward the end of his life, he looked at the digital landscape and saw a structural collapse of intellectual hierarchy.

Eco observed: Social media gives legions of idiots the right to speak when they once only spoke at a bar after a glass of wine, without harming the community... but now they have the same right to speak as a Nobel Prize winner. It is the invasion of the idiots.

Eco delivered this critique in 2015 while receiving an honorary degree at the University of Turin. His concern was not rooted in elitism, but in the loss of editorial filtering. He spent decades analyzing how truth is constructed, and he feared that a platform where every voice is amplified equally would eventually lead to the death of expertise. In his view, the democratization of opinion had accidentally dismantled the value of knowledge.

(Adnkronos) - Elena Kostioukovitch racconta la vicenda editoriale in Urss del primo romanzo di Umberto Eco che prese in mano per la prima volta nella stanza segreta della Biblioteca statale di letterature straniere di Mosca già nel 1981. Quando il testo sette anni dopo fu finalmente pubblicato in Urss, dove era stato prima censurato, la materia europea che trattava amplificò l'anelito di cambiamento. Mentre mentre più tardi in Russia il Pendolo di Foucault entrò in risonanza, in senso opposto a quanto inteso dall'autore, con i primi germi allora sottotraccia dell'oltranzismo. Fra i due primi romanzi di Eco e la loro storia russa, la speranza dell’apertura.

(Adnkronos) - Elena Kostioukovitch recounts the editorial story of the first novel by Umberto Eco, which she took up for the first time in the secret room of the State Library of Foreign Literature in Moscow in 1981. When the text, seven years later, was finally published in Urss, where it had previously been censored, the European subject matter it dealt with amplified the yearning for change. While later in Russia, the Pendulum of Foucault resonated, in the opposite direction from that intended by the author, with the first germs then beneath the surface of ultra-conservatism. Between the two of Eco’s first novels and their Russian story, there was the hope of openness.
