SNL UK ends first series with modest ratings but secures second series

The first series of Saturday Night Live UK concluded with its lowest audience figures yet, facing strong competition from the Eurovision Song Contest. The finale, hosted by Sex Education actor Ncuti Gatwa, attracted 86,420 viewers at 10pm, a 28 per cent drop from the previous low of 120,000 during Jack Whitehall’s episode in April. This was also less than half the 197,000 viewers that Hannah Waddingham drew the week before. Meanwhile, Eurovision dominated the BBC with an average audience of 5.2 million, peaking at 5.9 million. Despite mixed critical reception, ranging from praise for its promise to some describing it as 'cringe', Sky has confirmed a second 12-episode series scheduled for autumn. The show has showcased a talented ensemble including George Fouracres, Jack Shep, Annabel Marlow, Hammed Animashaun, Ania Magliano, and Paddy Young, who host Weekend Update, as well as Emma Sidi, Ayoade Bamgboye, Larry Dean, Celeste Dring and Al Nash. The ratings dip followed a strong premiere, which had 226,000 viewers, declining gradually over subsequent episodes. Notable industry figures, such as Nick Mohammed, have praised the UK adaptation, calling it a significant development for British comedy, despite originating from an American format.
